MELCOTM TAPE

MelcoTM tape is used to seal seams and stitches on a variety of garments. Recently, we have also introduced a new line of MelcoTM tapes, designed to reinforce ultrasonically-bonded seams. All tapes are applied using a hot air welding machine. MelcoTM tape is often used for the following products:

- Waterproof outerwear for sports/leisure
- Military garments
- Dry suits & wet suits
- Waterproof shoes and boots, etc.

Following is a list of MelcoTM tape, and specific applications for each tape.

I. MELCOTM Tapes for Sealing Regular Seams and Stitches

A. Film tape:  for 2-ply laminates with a microporous hydrophobic moisture-permeablewaterproof membrane

1. tape substrate: non-thermoplastic crosslinked PU film

    FU-700: standard type
FU-750: an extremely thin and elastic version of MelcoTM FU-700 tape, using thinner and lower modulus film.  When the tape is welded onto a thin, flexible waterproof material, the outline of the tape sometimes becomes visible from the outside of the material.  MelcoTM FU-750 tape was created to minimize such problems.

Using non-thermoplastic film as a tape substrate gives MELCOTM FU-700 and FU-750 tapes unmatched quality.  These tapes can be conveniently applied using an iron, without having to worry about specific heat adjustments. San Chemicals, Ltd. is the only company currently offering this type of tape.

2. tape substrate: thermoplastic PU film

FU-777: The tape uses thermoplastic film which will melt if excess heat (in excess of film’s melting point) is applied.  Close attention must be paid to the welding conditions and welding speed.

Although other companies offer thermoplastic-type film tapes, MELCOTM FU-777 tape provides vastly superior performance.  Heat adjustments are easier to make with FU-777 tape due to its design (the difference in heat properties between the tape substrate and the hot-melt adhesive is set as wide as possible for better and easier application).

B. Film tape:  for 2-ply laminates with a non-porous hydrophilic moisture-permeable waterproof membrane

XF-8505: An extremely thin and elastic tape, using thinner and lower modulus film.  Sometimes when the tape is welded onto a thin flexible waterproof material, the outline of the tape becomes visible from the outside of the material.  MELCOTM  XF-8505 tape minimizes this problem.

C. Film tape: for 2-ply laminates with a waterproof heavy-compact membrane

T-3900: a heavy film tape, especially designed for life jackets or dry-suits that use polyurethane-laminated cloth.  T-3900 tape is well suited to withstand severe conditions requiring resistance to hydrolysis, resistance to corrosion from salt water, etc.

D. Cloth tape: for 3-ply laminates with a microporous hydrophobic moisture-permeable waterproof membrane

    T-2000X: standard type
T-2000: a modified version of T-2000X tape. T-2000 tape is applied to 3-ply shoe materials.
T-2100: a modified version of T-2000X tape. T-2100 tape is designed for application onto thin and flexible 3-ply waterproof materials with an extremely thin inner tricot layer. Sometimes when tape is welded onto a thin, flexible 3-ply waterproof material (such as an extremely thin tricot layer that is knit with thin filament), the outline of the tape becomes visible from the outside of the material. MELCOTM T-2100 tape helps minimize this problem.
T-2500: a flexible version of T-2000X.  MELCOTM T-2500 tape is designed for application onto 3-ply waterproof materials containing a twisted yarn tricot or brushed tricot as the backing fabric.

E. Cloth tape: for 3-ply laminates with a non-porous hydrophilic moisture-permeable waterproof membrane

XT-2755: MELCOTM XT-2755 tape can be applied to non-porous hydrophilic polyurethane membranes or non-porous hydrophilic polyester membranes.

F. Cloth tape: for waterproof materials with expanded CR sponge

T-5000: an elastic cloth tape for marine suits with jersey-laminated CR (NeopreneTM) sponge

    T-5500
a special version of MELCOTM T-5000, which has a non-slip surface with dots.

II. MELCOTM Tapes for Reinforcement of Ultrasonically Bonded Seams

Advantages of ultrasonic seam bonding include efficient processing (combing cutting and sewing processes into one step) and high degree of softness over the seam. However, one disadvantage is that the seam can rip fairly easily if the seam is stretched from side to side. MELCOTM RF-6200 and RF-6600 tapes are the ultimate tapes for reinforcement of ultrasonically bonded seams.

RF-6200: The tape is designed for application onto textile materials which do not require waterproof protection.
RF-6200 tape consists of a specially-designed half-tricot fabric with T-5000 tape adhesive technology. Because the durability and strength of T-5000 adhesive are time-proven over many years and under many different conditions, RF-6200 tape is able to deliver peak performance reliability. By design, RF-6200 tape does not stretch in width, thus reinforcing the seam. However, it has excellent stretchability lengthwise (to accommodate curved seam lines). Clothing welded with RF-6200 retain an unusually smooth contour over ultrasonic seams, due to the thinness and the softness of the tape.
RF-6600: The tape is applied onto 3-ply waterproof materials.
RF-6600 tape combines a specially-designed half-tricot fabric with T-2000X tape adhesive technology. Like RF-6200 tape, RF-6600 tape does not stretch in width to reinforce the seam. 3-ply waterproof garments welded with RF-6600 possess an unusually smooth contour over ultrasonic seams, while remaining water tight, due to the thinness of the tape and the melting properties of the adhesive.

All MELCOTM tapes have excellent water-resistance after repeated washing (over 60oC) and dry-cleaning.
